Taking
public service to heart
Barry
Grodenchik and Michele Titus serve their constituents
with a spirit of caring, the persistence to push through
positive change, a strong sense of justice and a deep-rooted
love for the districts they represent as members of the
New York State Assembly. No wonder: The Queens communities
they serve are the ones where they were raised, went to
school, and were married. Now they are raising families
of their own there and their parents have retired there
as well. They're striving to ensure the health and safety
of their families, friends and neighbors, and a good quality
of life and of opportunities for their constituents.

President's
Message: Tuition redux
Last spring, this column
referred to the debate about a tuition increase for the
SUNY system. As you know by now, after considerable discussion
and protest, the State University Board of Trustees approved
an increase in tuition of $950, to $4,350 a year. Even with
this increase, SUNY tuition ranks in the middle, or even
on the low end, compared to tuition costs at public universities
with similar standing. The University of Maryland at College
Park, the Òflagship campusÓ there, increased tuition to
$6,759; the University of Virginia rose to $5,968; the University
of Michigan to $7,975; and the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst to $7,482.
