2009-10 Budget: Advocacy message loud and clear
By Diane Greiwe
During the past few months, more than 5,000 Binghamton University alumni and supporters have sent more than 24,000 letters to policymakers in Albany, urging the state to maintain current funding levels, return tuition increases to campuses and implement much needed reforms. According to President Lois B. DeFleur, policy makers “are getting these messages, and the message is loud and clear.”
Our current focus is on including all four University Centers in Bill A.2020/S.2020, which would make it possible for Binghamton and the other SUNY University Centers to develop a rational tuition policy; retain tuition increases for educational purposes; implement a more flexible spending and contracting policy; and gain greater access to capital funding. These reforms are necessary if we are to maintain accessibility and quality and compete nationally for the best students and researchers.
