On Oct. 15, the Alumni Association co-sponsored a panel discussion titled The China Century? Perspectives on the emergence of China as an economic and political mega-power. The event took place at the Levin Institute in Manhattan, and was the first alumni panel discussion to be streamed live over the web. About 200 alumni, students and faculty members tuned in. Yang Chen '87, executive director of the Asian American Bar Association of New York, was the moderator. Panelists were Sheryl WuDunn, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author on China and Asia; Joel Kellman '63, co-founder, GGV Capital; Bobby Liu '93, senior vice president and general counsel, M.D. Sass Securities LLC; and John Chaffee, director of Binghamton University's Institute for Asia and Asian Diasporas. Party with a Purpose - a young professionals networking event and fundraiser - took place at Sake Tumi Restaurant in downtown Binghamton on Oct. 23. About 80 people attended this sold-out event, which raised more than $1,700 for the Philanthropy Incubator, a foundation created by Binghamton University students that provides grants to local non-profit organizations. The Binghamton University Alumni Association held its second event in Seoul, South Korea on the evening of Oct. 31. About 80 alumni attended the gathering at Renaissance Seoul Hotel. President Lois B. DeFleur (pictured with Yoon Seok Jee) told attendees that Binghamton University is dedicated to a growing presence in Korea. Other University officials who attended the event: Katherine Krebs, vice provost for international programs; John Chaffee; Martha Reitman from the Division of Research; Sungdai Cho from the Center for Korean Studies; and Dan Polhamus '00, associate director of alumni relations. On Nov. 7, members of the Xi Rho Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority gathered for a 25th anniversary reunion luncheon. The event tok place at City Hall Restaurant in Manhattan. Xi Rho Chapter was chartered at Binghamton University on May 5, 1984.
