For some alumni, the biggest lessons learned during college have little to do with academics.
Hundreds of alumni returned to campus for Homecoming 2009, held Oct. 2-4. The weekend included a number of reunion gatherings and family-friendly events.
Tailgate '09 - a large outdoor barbecue that preceded the men's soccer game and fireworks display - was the main event of the weekend. People came to the Events Center parking lot on Saturday afternoon to enjoy good food, conversation with friends and picture-perfect weather. The turnout appeared to exceed that of last year's Homecoming tailgate, which was the first ever.
Dan Cherico '08 wasn’t able to make it to that, but didn’t miss this year’s event.
“I was a big supporter of the athletics when I was a student,” Cherico said. “It has carried on now that I’m an alumnus. This event was a great way for me to make sure I saw everybody I needed to see in one place.”
Homecoming also included gatherings for members of special-interest groups and milestone class years. The Class of 1984 was just one of the reunion groups; some who attended hadn’t been back on campus since graduation.
“Homecoming is excellent. Seeing old friends...it brings you right back to 25 years ago,” said Alex Boukas '84.
Members of the Class of 1989 celebrated their 20th anniversary at Homecoming 2009.
“(Tailgate) has been better than what I expected,” said Dennis Garcia '89, a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. “There are people here I haven't seen in 20 years. This is just a great opportunity to connect with everyone again.”
The weekend also gave alumni the chance to see how the campus has grown in the years since they graduated.
“It’s a little strange because the campus is a lot different now than when I was here,” said Jennifer Seary '00.
