For Immediate Release: May 6, 1999

President Lois B. DeFleur has announced that Binghamton University will begin complying with NCAA rules for Division I athletics effective June 1.

The decision sets the stage for Binghamton to become a Division I member by September 2001 following a two-year compliance period.

In making the announcement, DeFleur said: "The decision to move to Division I is an investment in the future of Binghamton University. I believe that excellent academic programs as well as athletics are complementary learning experiences for many students, and competitive intercollegiate athletics enhance the quality of life on the campus and in the local community."

DeFleur noted that the majority of Binghamton's peers compete at the Division I level, including the other SUNY centers, and have a long history of balance between academic and athletic programs. "Binghamton University provides its students with outstanding educational opportunities," she said.

"The move to Division I will enhance these as well as Binghamton's visibility and reputation."
DeFleur's decision comes on the heels of a recommendation from the Intercollegiate Athletic Board last week that Binghamton declare its intention to begin compliance with NCAA Division I regulations.

In the school’s first year as a Division II program in 1998-99, Binghamton has crowned one national champion, seven All-Americans, had three teams advance to NCAA tournaments, and six teams win conference championships.

Within the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), Binghamton garnered the Walter Peterson President’s Cup — an award presented to the member school with the best overall athletics program, as determined by conference placement in all 13 sponsored sports throughout the fall, winter and spring. In the competition, BU beat out fellow SUNY centers Albany and Stony Brook, along with Sacred Heart — all of whom are entering Division I competition next fall.
