MIKE DOHERTY '84 A graduate of Vestal High School, Mike Doherty played soccer at Binghamton from 1979-1982. He earned his bachelor's degree in applied social science in 1984. After transferring back home as a sophomore in 1979, Doherty led Binghamton to 30 wins in three seasons, capped by a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. In 1980, he steered the Colonials into the NCAA quarterfinals - the furthest advancement of any team in school history. The team was ranked fifth in the nation after an 11-5-2 season, which also included conference and state championships. Doherty was named all-region at forward after producing an eight-goal, three-assist campaign that featured his back-to-back game-winning overtime goals in the NCAA tournament. A knee injury sidelined him for the 1981 season, but Doherty returned with a vengeance for his senior season in 1982. After registering eight goals and 22 points, he was rewarded as the program's first-ever NSCAA first-team All-American. In his final season, he led Binghamton to a 12-3-1 mark, another conference championship, and a top-10 national ranking. He scored the game-winner in the SUNYAC title game, and received all-region accolades for the third straight year. A two-year captain and three-time all-state pick, Doherty graduated fourth in career scoring with 24 goals and 63 points, and was named the school's "Athlete of the Year" in 1980-81. Doherty was a two-time prep All-American while at Vestal, and is also a member of that school's Hall of Fame, as well as the New York State Section IV Hall of Fame. |
