BU men's golf storms to lead halfway through New England Championship
Bearcats shoot even-par 288, lead four-time defending champ Rhode Island by seven

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Binghamton golf got off to a sizzling start at the New England Championship Friday at Triggs Memorial Golf Course, firing an even-par 288 to grab the lead in the 16-team event. The Bearcats lead four-time defending champion Rhode Island (295) by seven strokes heading into Saturday's final round.

Boston College (300), Hartford (302) and Brown (302) round out the top five teams.

Binghamton has three players in the top 10 and all five in the top 20.

Junior Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y.) recorded four birdies and 14 pars en route to a four-under 68 that put him in first place among 80 golfers. He is one stroke ahead of Rhode Island's Jesse Larson. Juniors Aaron Ungvarsky (Wilmington, Mass.) and Matt Mattingly (Manlius, N.Y.) each shot 73 and were in a tie for sixth place. Senior Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.) and sophomore Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.) each shot 74.

Binghamton tees off in the final groups beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
