Immediate Release: September 16, 2006 PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Binghamton University golf lopped 19 strokes off its opening round to jump up to seventh place out of 16 teams at the 36-hole Rutgers Invitational, played Friday and Saturday at the par-71 Rutgers Golf Course. After struggling to 303 on Friday, BU stormed back to fire an even-par 284 on Saturday, finishing at 587. Seton Hall won the event at 574, followed by Villanova (578), St. John's (580) and Columbia (580) in the top five. The scheduled 54-hole event was reduced to 36 holes after heavy rain delayed Friday's opening round. Junior Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way on Saturday, shooting a two-under 69. He wound up at 144 (75-69), tied with senior teammate Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y.), who recorded back-to-back 72s. Junior J.J. Shearer (Binghamton, N.Y.) shot 78-71=149 and freshman Patrick Donovan (Oswego, N.Y.) shaved 10 strokes off his opening round (82-72=154). Senior Aaron Ungvarsky (Wilmington, Mass.) shot 78-77=155. The Bearcats' final-round 284 was the second best round (out of 32) played in the tournament, bettered only by champoion Seton Hall's final-round 282 on Saturday. Binghamton next plays at the St. John's Invitational beginning on Friday. |
