Bearcats are runners-up at Yale Spring Open NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Even without a strong showing from its team ace, Binghamton took a bite out of the host Bulldogs and earned runner-up honors at the 22-team Yale Spring Open Saturday and Sunday at the Yale Golf Course. The Bearcats, who are battling Yale and Central Connecticut for an NCAA tournament berth, shot 308-313=621 at the par-70 course to beat every team except UConn (304-308=612). Yale was third (623), followed by Hartford (624) and Harvard (625) in the top five. Central Connecticut was seventh (312-329=641) - 20 strokes behind Binghamton. "We got Yale on their home course, and also nipped Hartford and beat Central Connecticut," head coach John Affleck said. "Those were the people we had to beat. It's a nice feeling, but we still have more work ahead." In the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin District I rankings, Rhode Island was first, followed by Yale, Binghamton and Central Connecticut. The top three teams will earn a berth to the NCAA East Regional on May 15-17. Junior Joe Kunz (Webster, N.Y./Monroe CC) fired rounds of 74-78=152 to finish in a two-way tie for third among 114 golfers. Kunz was two strokes behind medalist Andrew Klein of Harvard. "What a show Joe put on," Affleck said. "He had three birdies on the first day, and Yale is not a birdie course." Freshman Brad Moulton (Orangeville, Ontario) carded 78-76=154 to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place. "Brad was nothing short of outstanding." Affleck said. "His irons are so dead accurate." Freshman Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.), playing his first tournament with BU's top team, shot 77-78=155 to tie for 10th place. Senior captain Adam Fuchs (Plainview, N.Y./JFK-Plainview), one of the best players in the entire region, struggled to a pair of 81s and tied for 33rd. Fuchs entered the tournament owning seven top-10 finishes in nine tournaments, and a 73.8 stroke average. Junior Keith Hendrickson (Syosset, N.Y.) shot 79-84=163 to tie for 39th. "It's something to be carried along by our Nos. 4 and 5 men," Affleck said. "That shows the depth of this team. To have the freshmen step up (Moulton and Crawford) on their first trip to Yale, with all that pressure, is rewarding. Crawford is one tough competitor. Pinch-hitting for Eric Vinal in the lineup, he absolutely contributed two solid rounds of golf."
