In a giant step toward Division I, the Binghamton University mens basketball team has scheduled a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference schools University of Virginia and Florida State University for the 2000-2001 season, the schools final as a Division II member. Coach Jim Norris squad will play a total of six games against Division I foes, including single games against Patriot League members Colgate and Army, and a home-and-home set against longtime rival and now Division I independent Stony Brook. The games at Virginia and Florida State are not only a great opportunity for us, but they send a signal that we are on our way to Division I Norris said. The ACC is regarded as the premier conference in the country, and were looking forward to the challenge. The Bearcats will head to Tallahassee for a December 2 meeting with Steve Robinsons Seminoles. The game will be played in FSUs Leon County Civic Center, which seats 12,500. Two weeks later, BU will take on head coach Pete Gillen and the Cavaliers, who play in the 8,450-seat University Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia. The full 2000-01 schedule is not complete, but also includes highly-regarded Division II tournaments hosted by St. Rose, Bloomsburg (Pa.) and Bryant (R.I.). The men will play in the Capital Key Classic in Albany, as will the BU women, who were runners-up to host St. Rose in this years event.
