Ed Stephenson begins his sixth
season at the helm of the Binghamton program in 2007. He is the
only coach the Bearcats have ever had and has built the program
into a prominent squad in the America East Conference.
Last season, the Bearcats broke into the national rankings after
early-season upsets over No. 8 Towson and No. 17 Hobart. Although
Binghamton lost in the America East Conference semifinals to
eventual champion UMBC, it proved to be a team on the rise as
a conference-best four players were named to the America East
All-Rookie squad.
Two seasons earlier, Stephenson and the Bearcats went 10-6, including
a perfect 6-0 in conference play. The Bearcats were the runner
up at the America East Tournament and Stephenson was named the
conference's Coach of the Year. In addition, goalie Kevin McKeown
was named honorable metion All-America and the Bearcats had the
number one defense in the nation, allowing only 6.94 goals per
game.
While
Stephenson's record at Binghamton stands at 26-39, he has gone
21-23 the last three season while playing a non-conference schedule
against the likes of Cornell, Princeton, Towson and Hofstra.
In the America East Conference, however, the Bearcats have gone
12-5 in regular-season contests since the start of the 2004 season.
During that same span, Binghamton has earned 11 all-conference
accolades and seven all-rookie honors.
Stephenson came to Binghamton after serving as the top assistant
at Hobart during the 2001 season. Prior to that, he spent five
years as an assistant at University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
It was there that Stephenson first started gaining notice as
one of the top young coaches and recruiters in the nation. Stephenson
served as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator
while at UMBC, and the Retrievers made back-to-back trips to
the NCAA Division I tournament during his tenure.
Upon arriving at Binghamton, Stephenson served as coordinator
of both the mens and womens lacrosse programs in
2001-02. With his preparation and perseverance, both programs
made their Division debuts in the spring of 2002. Stephenson
coached the inaugural BU squad to the schools historic
first victory an 8-7 win over Boston College.
Stephenson enjoyed a brilliant playing career at Towson University,
capping his four-year tenure with Division I All-America honors
in 1989. He received three straight all-conference honors, and
as a senior captain, led the Tigers to the NCAA tournament for
the first time in program history. Stephenson then played professionally
for the Pittsburgh Bulls of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League
(MILL) from 1990-92, earning all-star honors in 1990. He was
inducted into Towsons Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall
of 2001.
After earning his bachelors degree in physical education
from Towson in 1992, Stephenson served as an assistant coach
at Towson from 1993-95, during which time the Tigers again advanced
to the NCAA tournament. |
