Box Score

HAMILTON, N.Y.--The host Raiders (8-6) took a 3-1 lead after the first period, led 5-2 at halftime and defeated visiting Binghamton (4-8) 9-3 in a non-conference game at Tyler's Field on Saturday afternoon.

Colgate controlled play from the outset, scoring the game's first three goals and holding Binghamton without a goal from midway through the second quarter until late in the fourth quarter, a span in which the Raiders scored five unanswered goals. Colgate held a 34-20 shot advantage and grabbed 40 ground balls, compared to just 20 for Binghamton.

Freshman attacker Brian Morgan (Littleton, Col./Heritage) scored an unassisted goal with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter, and freshman attacker Phil Cavallo (Cedarhurst, N.Y./Lawrence) scored off of a feed from freshman attacker Brian Chaapel (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) just under four minutes into the second quarter. Freshman midfielder Brian Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored the final goal of the game with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter, finding the net on a pass from freshman midfielder John Gaudet (Binghamton, N.Y.).

Steven Herbst led Colgate with one goal and four assists, marking his second straight game with at least five points. Peter Watts scored a pair of goals 45 seconds apart in the first quarter to open the scoring, and Chris Michaels tallied three goals for the Raiders.

Freshman goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.), who ranks second in the America East in goals-against-average this season, allowed six goals in 45 minutes, while also making eight saves. Andrew Jarolimek played all but the final minute in goal and had 12 saves.

Cavallo finishes the season with a team-best 27 goals and 30 points. He scored at least once in every game and had seven games with multiple goals scored. He had a season-best five goals in a 10-7 victory over Lafayette on March 1 and tallied four goals and a pair of assists in a 9-5 win against Siena this past Thursday. Cavallo ranks among the conference leaders in scoring per game and goals per game. Chaapel finishes the season second in scoring with 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists). He led the squad with 12 assists and ranks among the conference leaders in assists per game.

Just two years removed from club-level status, the Bearcats showed vast improvement from their inauguaral season, reaping quick benefits from a recruiting class of 25 individuals that featured 23 freshmen, including five high school all-americans. Binghamton defeated Quinnipiac 7-6 on March 21 for its first-ever America East victory and finished fifth in a highly competitive conference. A narrow 5-4 loss to Vermont at Binghamton Alumni Field was all that kept the Bearcats from earning a berth in the America East Championship later this month.
