Bearcats
defeat Lafayette 10-7 Box Score BETHLEHEM, Pa.--Freshman attacker Phil Cavallo (Cedarhurst, N.Y.) had a school-record five goals and the Bearcats (1-1) posted their first win of the year, defeating Lafayette (0-1) 10-7 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game was moved to the indoor facility on the Lehigh University campus after inclement weather rendered Lafayette's field unplayable. "This was a real nice win for us," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "We played hard and made it tough for Lafayette to really get it going. Most importantly, we played at a faster speed and improved on the things that gave us problems in our first game." Lafayette jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Binghamton netted two goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter, tying the game at 2-2. Freshman Brian Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y.) fed classmate Brian Chaapel (Penn Yan, N.Y.) at the 13:18 mark of the second quarter, and just 43 seconds later Charlie Cook (Liverpool, N.Y.) took a pass from John Gaudet (Binghamton, N.Y.) and tied the game with a man-up goal. The Leopards rebuilt a 4-2 lead late in the quarter, but Binghamton struck again with a pair of goals in the last two minutes of the half to go into intermission tied 4-4. With 2:20 left in the period, Gaudet fed Joe Vavala (Dewey Beach, Del.) for a goal, and with just 38 seconds left, Cavallo scored his first goal of the game off a pass from Joe Conner (Ijamsville, Md.). The Bearcats outscored Lafayette 4-1 in the third period to take a commanding 8-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter. BU took the lead for good less than two minutes into the second half on a goal from Scott Mitchell (Smithtown, N.Y.). Cavallo scored twice in the period and Chappel had two assists. Binghamton outshot their hosts 29-20 and cleared the ball on 9-of-13 possessions. Junior goalie Adam Skiadas (Binghamton, N.Y.) had 10 saves. For the second straight game, all of Binghamton's goal scorers were freshmen. The 10-goal output was a new school record, surpassing the eight tallies the Bearcats had against Boston College last season. It also marked the first-ever win against a team from the Patriot League. The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. game against nationally-ranked Hofstra. |
