Immediate Release: March 7, 2004 Contact: David Berman (berman@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-2956 Balanced production leads Bearcats to 11-4 win over Lafayette Box Score EASTON, Pa.--Freshman Rob Williams (Fulton, N.Y.) and sophomroe Phil Cavallo (Cedarhurst, N.Y.) netted three goals apiece, and Binghamton (1-0) opened the 2004 campaign with an 11-4 win over host Lafayette (1-3) on Saturday afternoon at Metzgar Field. "I thought for the first time outdoors we played very well," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "Our defense played great and it's good to get a win under our belt." The Bearcats took control of the game early on, scoring on their first three shots in the opening three minutes of the game for a quick 3-0 lead. Sophomore Matt DeCirce (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal just 25 seconds after play started. Binghamton then scored goals just 14 seconds apart in the third minute. Freshman Nate Kerstein (Rochester, N.Y.) took a feed from Williams and scored at 12:53, and senior Chris Healy (Freeport, N.Y.) added an unassisted goal at 12:39. The Bearcats took a 5-1 lead into halftime and never looked back in the second half. For the game, BU outshot its hosts 37-16 and was successful on 12 of 14 clears. Binghamton returns to action on Monday night with a contest against nationally-ranked Hofstra. |
