Immediate Release: February 26, 2005 Contact: Thomas Moore II (sports@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-2956 Villanova holds off Bearcats 5-2 in season opener Box Score VILLANOVA, Pa.--Host No. 22 Villanova (1-1) increased its 2-1 lead halftime and defeated Binghamton (0-1) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats outscored the Bearcats 2-0 in the pivotal forth quarter. Sophomore midfielder Jeff Santucci (Cicero, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist for Binghamton and freshman Stephen Smith (Canandaigua, N.Y.) chipped in one goal. Sophomore Rob Williams (Fulton, N.Y) assisted the Bearcats other goal. The Bearcats outshot Villanova 24-18. Junior goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.) made five saves. "The one positive that we can take out of this game is that our defense is the best it has been since I have been here," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "I give their goalie credit, he made some very impressive saves. Offensively we were not able to break them down they way wanted to." The Wildcats had the slight advantage winning 6 of the 11 faceoffs. Villanova scooped 38 ground balls, while Binghamton had 26. The Bearcats will now head to Hobart for their first ever meeting with the Statesmen, the game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday. |
