edges Binghamton 5-4 BINGHAMTON, N.Y.--Vermont (5-5, 2-1 AE) scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 4:26 remaining, to defeat host Binghamton (3-6, 1-3 AE) 5-4 in a conference game Saturday evening at Binghamton Alumni Field. The Catamounts broke a 3-3 tie just under five minutes into the final period when senior midfielder Doug Moses (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) scored off a pass from junior attackman Mark Prior (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger). Vermont then regained control of the ball and held possession for several minutes, but BU freshman midfielder Matt DeCirce (Binghamton, N.Y.) knotted the game at 4-4 with 7:49 remaining. However, junior attacker Phil McKnight (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) tallied the winning goal for Vermont just over three minutes later, and the Catamounts withstood several scoring chances by the Bearcats in the closing minutes of the game. Vermont opened the scoring with three goals in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Catamounts led 2-1 before scoring the final goal of the half with just three seconds left. However, the Bearcats held Vermont scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter, and Binghamton eventually tied the game at 3-3 after scoring one goal in the third quarter and adding another just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter. Freshman attacker Phil Cavallo (Cedarhurst, N.Y./Lawrence) led Binghamton with two goals, while classmate Brian Chaapel (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) had two assists. Moses also had two assists for Vermont, while sophomore goalie Michael Gabel (Falmouth, Mass.) had seven saves, the last three of which came in the final four minutes of the game to preserve the Catamounts 5-4 lead. Binghamton returns to action next Saturday at noon when they host Hartford in the final conference game of the season. The Bearcats likely need a win against Hartford to qualify for the America East Championship later this month.
