Binghamtons Stephen Rybak (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), who had entered the game because of an injury just moments before, kicked the ball towards the net at the 47:00 mark. The ball was deflected by the Buffalo keeper, but in an attempt to clear the ball, the defender misfired into his own net for the only goal of the game. The Bearcats controlled possession for much of the first half, holding an 11-7 shot advantage at the break and 21-16 for the game. Both teams battled even following the lone goal, with both goalkeepers stopping several potential goals. We talked all week about putting together the total game, said BU head coach Paul Marco. This is as close as we have come this year. We saw signs of progress today. Binghamton goalkeeper Ian Wendel (Sparta, N.J.) had a career-high eight saves in recording his first complete game shutout of the season. Chris Vavrina (Pittsford, N.Y.) also played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bulls, and recorded eight saves. Binghamton returns to action next Sunday when it opens conference play with a home contest against New Hampshire. The game will mark Binghamtons America East Conference debut. Buffalo travels to Wright State for a 7 p.m. match on Friday. |
