splits doubleheader at Colgate

VESTAL,
N.Y.---Sophomore second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y./
Olean) homered twice and senior pitcher Michelle Weeks
(Bunnell, Fla./ Flagler Palm Coast) fired a two-hit shutout,
leading Binghamton to a doubleheader split at Cornell in non-conference
action on Wednesday afternoon. The Bearcats won the opener 9-0
in six innings before losing in the nightcap 3-2.
Vitello went 2-for-3 in the opener in the first game with three
RBI. With Binghamton up 1-0 in the top of the third inning, she
drilled a solo home run which marked the second straight game
that she has gone deep. The Bearcats then took advantage of a
Colgate error in the fourth inning and three errors in the fifth
inning to score four more times and take a 6-0 cushion.
In
the top of the sixth inning, freshman third baseman Sara Eppolito
(Manlius, N.Y./ Fayetteville-Manlius) led off the inning
with a home run to make it 7-0. Later in the inning, Vitello
and junior left fielder Marisa DeStasio (Bethlehem, Pa./ Freedom)
each had RBI singles to stretch the lead to 9-0. When Colgate
failed to score in the bottom of the sixth inning, the game was
ended due to the eight-run mercy rule.
As
for Weeks, she went the full six inning, allowing just two hits
and two walks while striking out eight batters. Her record improved
to 5-7.
In the third inning of game two, Vitello struck again, with a
two-run home run to give Binghamton the early 2-0 advantage.
The Red Raiders got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning
courtesy of a solo homer by shortstop Natalie Rawson. Colgate
then went ahead for good on a two-run home run by center fielder
Dorothy Donaldson in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bearcats
then went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.
Sophomore pitcher Lauren Reis (Glenmont, N.Y./ Bethlehem)
took the loss despite only giving up three hits and striking
out seven batters. Two of the hits, however, were the home runs
as her record fell to 1-1 on the season.
