For Immediate Release: April 15, 2004 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Softball splits doubleheader with UMBC Game 1 Box: Binghamton 7, UMBC 0 Game 2 Box: UMBC 2, Binghamton 0 VESTAL, N.Y.---Sophomore pitcher Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y./ Minisink Valley) tossed a two-hit shutout as Binghamton (11-12-1, 4-3 AE) split an America East Conference softball doubleheader against UMBC (20-23, 1-6 AE) on Wednesday afternoon at the East Gym Complex. The Bearcats won the opening game 7-0 before dropping the nightcap 2-0. Hansen surrendered just one walk and struck out four batters in the opener to improve her record to 7-6 on the season. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Nicholson took the loss for UMBC as her record fell to 7-7. The Bearcats wasted no time offensively in the first game as sophomore shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y./ General Brown) homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning. It was her fourth home run of the season. Senior catcher Jessica Chellis (Tunkhannock, Pa./ Tunkhannock) and junior center fielder Jessica Dima (Staten Island, N.Y./ Port Richmond) each had two RBI in the win. In the nightcap, however, sophomore pitcher Amy Sandowl turned the tables on Binghamton by tossing a five-hit shutout. She allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter. The Retrievers had only two hits in the second game but took advantage of a Bearcat error in top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, freshman designated hitter Kelly Claar belted her sixth home run of the season to extend the lead to 2-0. Sandowl improved her record to 7-7 on the season while senior pitcher Michelle Weeks (Bunnell, Fla./ Flagler Palm Coast) took the loss despite only allowing two hits and one earned run. Her record fell to 3-6 Binghamton travels to Boston for a three-game series this coming weekend while UMBC heads to Maine for a three game series, also starting this weekend.
