VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) scored a team-high 17 points to go along with three steals and the Binghamton Bearcats (6-7) held off the visiting Army Black Knights (9-8) in a non-conference game Monday evening at West Gymnasium.

The Black Knights cut what had once been a 20-point lead to just five with an 11-4 run late in the second half. However, with Army trailing 50-45, the Bearcats nailed 12-of-16 free throws in the final 3:36 to seal the victory. Binghamton wound up making 14-of-20 free throws for the game, all in the second half.

Blues opened the second half with a three-pointer just 12 seconds after play began, then drilled a jumper 30 seconds later as Binghamton opened up a 28-11 lead. The Bearcats stretched the lead to 35-15 with 16:18 remaining before the Black Knights battled back. Also scoring in double figures for Binghamton was junior forward Leala Wegwerth (Maplewood, Minn.), who finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Binghamton shot 52 percent in the second half.

Junior center Katie MacFarlane (Clarence, N.Y.) led three Black Knights' in double figures, recording game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds. MacFarlane put home 15 of her 19 points in the second half on the strength of 7-for-10 shooting from the floor. Also reaching double figures for Army were seniors Christine Gassman (Newbury, N.H.) and Amy Saal (Elkhart, Ind.), who each scored 10 points. The Black Knights outrebounded Binghamton 39-27 but turned the ball over 24 times and could not overcome a 3-for-19 shooting performance in the first half.

The Bearcats opened the game on a tear, using a 19-1 run in the first half to take a 23-7 lead with 2:57 remaining in the period. After holding an early 6-4 lead, Army was held without a field goal for nearly 15 minutes until MacFarlane connected on a layup with 13 seconds left in the half.

The Bearcats return to conference play on Wednesday night at Albany for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Binghamton won a pair of games against the Great Danes last season. The next home game is on Wednesday, December 29, against Northeastern at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Tonight's game was career win No. 100 for Binghamton head coach Laurie Kelly, who ironically was not at the game while on maternity leave ... Sophomore Kristin Hibler (Hutchinson, Kan.) made her first start of the season in place of Nicole Dypolt (Calgary, Alberta), who will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL that she suffered in the game against Maine on Saturday ... The 11 points allowed in the first half by Binghamton were the fewest since Bridgeport managed just four points against Binghamton in the first period on December 11, 1999 ... Binghamton went on to win that game 80-10.
