Binghamton women's basketball puts defensive clamps on Boston Univ., 47-33
Bearcats open second half with 16-2 run, win fourth straight game

VESTAL, N.Y.--- Binghamton (10-15, 9-7 America East) overcame a slow start and used a 16-2 second-half run to pull away from visiting Boston University (11-14, 6-10 AE), 47-33, in an America East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon from the Events Center. The win extended Binghamton's unbeaten streak to four games and kept the Bearcats in a tie for third place in the America East.

The game was an offensive struggle at both ends, as the Bearcats made just four field goals in the first half and shot 25% for the game, and the Terriers hit just 4-of-30 in the second half and wound up shooting 21%. The teams combined for 38 turnovers and 37 fouls.

"Our defense has pulled us out of a couple games in a row now ," head coach Rich Conover said. "I don't know how many more matches I have to light at halftime. Boston was very aggressive and we weren't ready at the start of the game. When we're tentative we're not a good team. When we penetrate and make good post moves we're a very good team."

Freshman Laine Kurpniece (Riga, Latvia) led the Bearcats with 11 points and junior forward Jen Haubrich (Bow, N.H.) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) chipped in a game-high 12 rebounds and scored all six of her points during the decisive 16-2 run to open the second half.

Boston University was led by junior guard Rachael Vanderwal, who scored 14 points.

Binghamton hits the road for its final two regular-season games, beginning with a Wednesday night tilt at Northeastern.
