VESTAL,
N.Y. - Visiting Boston University (9-11, 6-3 AE) opened the second
half with an 11-2 run and rolled to a 61-49 win over Binghamton
(7-12, 3-6 AE) in an America East game Saturday afternoon from
West Gym. The Terriers extended a three-point halftime lead to
as many as 18 points midway through the second half before settling
on the final 12-point margin.
Junior center Amparo Lopez (Madrid, Spain) scored on a
pair of layups and junior guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray,
N.J.) converted a three-point play in the opening minute
of the second half to key Boston's run. The Bearcats were within
10 after an 8-0 run late in the half, but managed just one field
goal over the game's final four minutes. Binghamton shot just
26 percent in the second stanza and was limited to 31 percent
shooting for the game. BU missed all nine of its three-point
attempts, while Boston was 0-for-4 from behind the arc.
"Defensively, when you hold a team to 61 points, you have
to be able to win a basketball game," said BU head coach
Laurie Kelly. "We were setting up well and getting good
shots on the offensive end, but we missed too many layups and
were not finishing on good shot opportunities.
Sophomore center Kristin Hibler (Hutchinson, Kan.) led
Binghamton with a career-high 16 points. She also matched a career
high with nine rebounds. Freshman forward Rachel Laws (Wyncote,
Pa.) was the only other Bearcat in double figures, recording
10 points and eight rebounds.
Lopez led the Terriers with a career-high 16 points and nine
rebounds, while also blocking three shots. Terhune added 15 points,
overcoming a 4-for-14 shooting performance with 7-of-8 accuracy
from the free throw line. Also scoring in double figures for
Boston was sophomore forward Larissa Parr (Eau Claire, Wisc.),
who netted 11 points and seven boards.
Binghamton will conclude its three-game home stretch with a 7
p.m. contest against Vermont on Wednesday evening. The Catamounts,
who were last season's regular season conference champions, rallied
late in the second half to defeat the Bearcats 63-60 in Burlington
on February 1.
NOTES: Today's game marked the first time this season
that neither the Bearcats nor their opponents connected on a
three-pointer ... It was the first time in at least five years
that the Bearcats have not made at least one three-pointer. |
