Binghamton women's basketball falls to Brown, 68-50, in Time Warner championship

VESTAL, N.Y.--Binghamton women's basketball managed just three field goals in the opening period and the Bearcats (1-2) couldn't recover from the ensuing 17-point halftime deficit, losing to Brown (3-1), 68-50, in the championship game of the Time Warner Classic, Sunday from the Events Center.

Binghamton misfired on 12 of its first 14 shots and the visiting Bears took advantage, staking out a 30-11 margin midway through the first half. Brown carried a 37-20 lead into the break, and stretched that cushion to as many as 24 points before settling on the final 18-point margin.

"You can't get off to a start like that and expect to come back against as good of a team as Brown," head coach Rich Conover said. "When you aren't scoring you cannot afford to struggle as much as we did on the defensive end."

Tournament MVP Holly Robertson used her 6-foot-5 frame to produce game-highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds in just 19 minutes of work. Robertson, a senior, was joined on the all-tournament team by junior guard Jackie Vocell, who nailed 6-of-7 shots from the floor en route to 16 points.

Junior forward Jen Haubrich (Bow, N.H.) scored a team-high 13 points for Binghamton - thanks almost exclusively to 11-of-12 marksmanship from the free throw line. Haubrich and junior guard Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) represented BU on the all-tournament team. A day after scoring 21 points, Laws chipped in eight points against Brown.

Also earning all-tournament honors were junior Sikeetha Shepard-Hall of Marshall and junior center Sugiery Monsac of Robert Morris. In the consolation game, Robert Morris defeated Marshall 59-53.

The Bearcats next travel to Syracuse to face the Orangewomen on Thursday, December 2.
