NEW YORK, N.Y. - Host Columbia (5-1) used a 7-2 late run to pull away from visiting Binghamton (1-4) in a women's basketball game Monday evening. The Lions trailed 16-6 to open the game, but rallied to forge a six-point halftime lead, and never trailed in the second half. The Bearcats were down by 13 points with 15:45 remaining before staging a 20-7 run that cut the margin to two, 60-58, with 4:25 remaining. Columbia, however, responded with a 7-2 run and then converted free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

The game was the first of five away contests for the Bearcats, who are off to the program's worst start in 13 years.

"Their post players had a great game," head coach Laurie Kelly said. "I felt like we had a chance to put them away early, but we're really struggling defensively. We're getting into trouble with five-minute lapses. We need to start putting together more minutes.

Overall, I think several players had some very solid minutes. We're trying to stay up right now."

Freshman guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) led Binghamton with 13 points. Junior point guard Kate Townley (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) chipped in 11 points.

The Bearcats next play at Manhattan College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
