Laura Scordino...

On the team’s mindset after losing first two games in Kentucky:

“We didn’t let ourselves get too upset after losing the first two games. We know that we’re a young team and we have a lot of skill. We learned a lot in the first two games and we know that we’re moving forward. We were excited for tonight’s game and we were ready to go. We knew that Cornell had a tough tempo and good shooters, but we were excited to play in front of the home crowd.”

“We didn’t necessarily think that tonight was a ‘must-win’ game; we really didn’t feel like that. It isn’t that we’re only looking at the conference games, but we knew it was a non-conference game and as a young team we know we’re not going to dominate right away. We’re a really good team and we just need to continually take little steps and pull things together.”

On Binghamton’s pressure defense:

“The pressure defenses we saw in Kentucky were great learning experiences for us. We saw heavy pressure and the press we used tonight was somewhat similar. On one hand, we know it’s what we’re going to be facing in every game, but we feel like we can go out and use it too. It wasn’t really something we had practiced or were planning on doing; we just kind of switched to it during the game.”

On the team’s reaction to facing an early deficit:

“We didn’t really panic when Cornell got out to a quick lead. We were getting some good shots and it just felt like it was a matter of time before we started coming around.”

On the team’s emotion during a 13-0 run early in the second half:

“We just got the press going. It felt like we finally started to play. It all started with when we turned it around with three minutes left in the first half. It was the first stretch this season where we were just playing together and having fun and playing like we know we can. We were very upbeat at halftime and we were ready to go at the beginning of the second half.”

On her approach to coming into the game off the bench:

“I come in and basically just try to get the ball up the floor. I try to take care of the ball and not turn it over. Offensively, I just try to score within the team’s offense. I’ll take the shots if they come. I got some random foul shots tonight, too.”

On what BU needs to do to be successful:

“We only had 13 turnovers tonight and it was a real positive. It’s one of the things we’ve brought together a little bit since the first game. We were getting better shots today than in the first two games, but we still didn’t shoot the ball all that well. If we continue to look for good shot opportunities, the shots will fall. In the meantime, we are a strong defensive team and we have to always play solid defense.”

Iesha Eldridge...

On the team’s game plan coming in:

“We wanted to hold them to under 50 points and we did; that was great. We were focusing on stopping #11 and #50. Particularly we had to stop #50 on the boards and keep her under her scoring average.”

On the team’s defensive effort:

“We played a great defensive game. They panicked with the ball and you can’t do that against a team like us.”

On her mindset coming into the game off the bench:

“I try to be a sparkplug when I come in the game. If the team is down, I want to score or get a steal or play tough defense to get the team fired up. I pride myself on my defense. When I’m playing good, I just want to play. It doesn’t matter if I start or come in as a sub.”

On holding Cornell scoreless for 10 minutes in the second half:

“I don’t even notice what’s going on when we’re out there. I remember getting a steal but that’s about it. The actual streaks and all just kind of fade out.”

“It seemed like Cornell wasn’t getting a lot of shots, so it felt like we had a big lead, and we did.”

On getting the first win of the season:

“It feels good to get that first win, but it doesn’t feel good to be 1-2.”

Coach Kelly:

On tonight’s game:

“We really started out of the gate slow, and we kind of have had a habit of tat. We struggle early on and get behind in games. Tonight, I was proud of how we came back and got a lead going into the half. We went to a full-court pressure and it really changed the tempo of the game. I think we forced Cornell to play a little faster than they wanted to play. Then in the second half we came out of the gate and steadily increased the lead. I thought it was our first extended period where we put some solid runs together.”

“We were able to get in a lot of people off the bench tonight. We kept rotating players and putting fresh legs in the game, and we did a great job of getting up and down the floor quickly on every possession. Iesha Eldridge was a huge spark for us off the bench tonight.”

“I was most pleased tonight with only turning the ball over 13 times. If we’re only going to shoot 36%, we have got to take care of the basketball and limit our turnovers so that we find some good shots.”

On switching to a full-court pressure midway through the first half:

“We weren’t hitting shots early on, and we needed to change some part of the game to start putting some points on the board. We went to the press, which we really hadn’t planned on, but it worked for us. Then we were able to go back into a half-court offense, and even though we still weren’t shooting all that well, we were able to find a good shot on almost every possession.”

On Nicole Dypolt:

“Nicole can be so hot and cold sometimes. She is such a good player when she is in her mode. Tonight she did a great job scoring inside, which is where we have been struggling. She also continued to do a great job defensively.”

On Iesha Eldridge:

“Iesha is really a sparkplug for us right now, regardless of whether it’s at the beginning of the game, middle of the game, or end of the game. She is so tough when she plays to her potential. Tonight she had a lot of steals and she took good shots. Defensively, she triggers things for us. Then she gets people back in transition and can find someone for a bucket.”

On Laura Scordino:

“Laura did a great job handling the ball tonight, and she got to the line 10 times as well, which was important for us.”

On Jennifer Blues:

“People just need to come out and watch her play. She can take it to the basket off the dribble. She is a tremendous player. We are pleased to have her and we can see that she’ll contribute big things for us.”

On next week’s game against Lehigh:

“Lehigh is a very tough team that will be coming off a tournament it is hosting at home this weekend. We played very poorly at their place last year and they beat us. To beat them, we’ll have to play the best that we can play. We can’t bring a B level game and expect to win. They are strong inside and feature good perimeter shooting.”

“Hopefully we can take some momentum out of this game and bring it into the game against Lehigh. It’s a good feeling to go into the break with a win. We played some good minutes today that were representative of the type of good basketball we’re going to play. That’s a big confidence boost for thet team and it’s something we’ll be building off of in practice.”

On Erin Forkey:

“Erin is very athletic and she can run the floor well. She is a smart player.”
