Coach Kelly... On tonights game: We had some minutes where we played good basketball, but we also had some minutes where we really struggled handling the ball. We needed to put together more good minutes today. [Eastern Kentucky] is a strong offensive rebounding team and we did a good job in the first half of preventing them from getting offensive boards. What we needed to improve on was gettng shots and handling the ball. You cant win with 34 turnovers. We knew coming in that Eastern Kentucky was a very good, top-70 program. Theyre the best team we have ever opened up against and we knew they would come ready to play. Im very pleased and proud with our effort today. Even once the outcome was decided, we played hard. I will leave the game on a positive note, knowing that it is a 40-minute game and that is exactly what we got from our players today. On Kate Townley: Kate had to handle full-court pressure the entire game, and she did that. She will face pressure like that all season. We didnt show it today, but I think were a better ball-handling team than we were last year. Jen Blues can bring the ball up the floor, as can Rachel Laws. Kate needed to get more shots today. On closing the game with a 15-1 run: Eastern Kentucky still had their top players on the floor at the end of the game. We had some fresh players out there, and they just put their heads down and drove to the basket. We werent doing that earlier on. We need to be aggressive going to the basket. Some of our players need to do a better job finding good shots. On the team: We are young and inexperienced, and we have a number of areas in which we need to improve. But we have a freshman class that represents perhaps the best recruiting class we have ever had. Our freshmen looked strong today. Were asking a lot of them very quickly and theyll improve with some time and experience. They are very talented. On tomorrows game with tournament-hosts Morehead State: Morehead State is a very tough team. They are physical and they score a lot of points. We beat them at our place last year in a very good game. They are playing a Division II team tonight, so they will come into tomorrows game fresh and ready to play. We are looking forward to matching up with them and hope to come out with a win. |
