VESTAL, N.Y.--A late second-half rally by the Bearcats (7-11, 3-5 AE) fell short, and the Hartford Hawks (5-14, 3-5 AE) came away with a 58-55 victory in a conference game Wednesday evening at West Gymnasium.

Hartford, which led by one at the break and never trailed in the second half, stretched its lead to 49-39 with a 10-3 run midway through the half. Free throws by senior guard Angie Pezzetta (Absecon, N.J.) with 5:30 remaining capped the run.

The Bearcats responded with an 11-3 run of their own, however, pulling to within two at 52-50 with 1:01 remaining. Freshman guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) made back-to-back three-pointers to spur Binghamton's rally. After a pair of Hartford free throws, the Bearcats had the ball down 54-50. However, an offensive foul turned the ball back over to the Hawks, who iced the game with four more free throws in the final 31 seconds.

"We had too many turnovers," said BU head coach Laurie Kelly. "Our turnovers and the shots we missed from the free throw line wound up being a key to the game, and that was disappointing. Once again, I thought we did a great job defensively, but our offense isn't where it needs to be."

Blues wound up with a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds for the Bearcats. Junior point guard Kate Townley (St. Paul, Minn.) had a season-high nine rebounds and also dished out five assists. The Bearcats grabbed a season-high 48 rebounds--20 on the offensive end--but were ultimately done in by 27 turnovers and a season-high 24 fouls.

Pezzetta led Hartford with 15 points on the strength of a 10-for-10 effort from the free throw line. Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks was freshman guard Erika Messam (Pemberton, N.J.), who scored all 13 of her points in the first half.

Tonight's game marked the first of three straight at home for Binghamton, who will take on Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m.

NOTES: The 48 rebounds for Binghamton were the most since BU grabbed 52 caroms against New Hampshire on Feb. 3, 2002 ... Binghamton head coach Laurie Kelly returned from maternity leave and was on the sideline for Binghamton.
