Bearcats lose first conference game to Maine, 64-45

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y.--Junior guard Melissa Heon (Somersworth, N.H.) led all scorers with 19 points, and the Maine Black Bears (10-4, 3-0 AE) pulled away from the Binghamton Bearcats (5-7, 2-1 AE) in a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at West Gymnasium.

The Bearcats trailed by 13 points at the half, 34-21, but closed the gap to 10 with 14:39 remaining at 39-29. Binghamton had the ball with a chance to cut the lead to single digits, but could not connect on a basket. Heon then launched a three-pointer to bring the Black Bears' lead back to 13. That basket kicked off a decisive 15-4 run over the next six minutes, stretching the lead to 54-33 with 7:37 left to play. Heon had five points during the run and junior forward Heather Ernest (Farmington, Maine) added four points. Ernest finished with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Freshman guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) was the lone Bearcat in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds. Binghamton was held to 28 percent shooting (16-57) for the game and was outrebounded 50-34.

Binghamton junior center Nicole Dypolt (Calgary, Alberta) left the game with a knee injury with 10:06 remaining in the first half. Dypolt, who averages 8.8 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Bearcats, did not return. Her status will be evaluated early next week.

The Bearcats will return to action at home on Monday evening, taking on Army at 5:30 p.m. in the final non-conference matchup of the season.

NOTES: Binghamton sophomore forward Erin Forkey (Freedom, N.Y.) had a career-high eight points ... Sophomore forward Kristin Hibler (Hutchinson, Kan.) finished with a season-best seven rebounds, which also tied a career high.
