Coach Kelly... On tonights game: The deciding factor tonight was our field-goal percentage. We only shot 28 percent from the floor. We did the exact opposite of last night, where we turned the ball over 34 times. We got good shots, but they just werent falling, particularly in the post. None of our post players stepped up to hit shots. We let a lot of good opportunities go by; we need to capitalize on the chances we get. We battled back to keep the game respectable. I thought we took care of the ball pretty well tonight. We make runs to get within 1-2 possessions but we cant seem to keep the run going and get over the hump to take the lead, and thats something were working on. We have a talented team. Its just going to take some time for them to get together. We did a nice job defensively tonight. [Morehead State] typically averaged 75-80 points per game last year and we held them to 65 points tonight. On freshman guard Jennifer Blues: It concerned me in the season opener [against Eastern Kentucky] that Jen only had five shots. I was so glad to see her step up tonight and take some big shots. I know the type of player she is, and we need her to take some shots. She has the green light from anywhere on the floor with us. She had a big, strong game tonight. We saw what she will be able to do for us. On freshman forward Jennifer Haubrich: Jen
was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line tonight and that was a real
positive for her. She struggled from the line in the preseason
and it was nice to see her knock in some shots tonight. She
was 1-for-8 from the floor but I thought she took good shots.
It shows us that if she can drop in a few more shots each game
that she is the type of player who can score 10-14 points per
game. We just need to remember this was only her second collegiate
game and we cant expect everything. We know she has the
ability, and we will be patient. We are able to establish position in the paint and get looks, but our shots are coming up short. Some of that could be fatigue for our players who logged significant minutes yesterday, but the bottom line is that we arent being aggressive enough going to the basket. Were settling for jump shots that come up short. In the past, we would drive to the hoop, and if we didnt make the shot, we could get to the free throw line. Were not getting a lot of foul shots from our post players. Thats just learning, and its something we need to work on. Jen Haubrich is still learning to be aggressive in the paint. Nicole Dypolt has really struggled getting anything in the basket in our first two games. She really looked great during the preseason, and getting post production from her is going to be vital to our success. Its what we need to focus on in practice before the game against Cornell on Wednesday. On where the team stands after its first two games: We have a lot of new people playing together for the first time and its going to take some time to put it all together. Well take some hits but the first two games prepared us to be a better team. It will take some time for us to get our rhythm and for our players to know what people do and where they get the ball on the floor. We learned a lot, and we are focused on the America East schedule that starts January 11. We have eight more games to get ready for that. After two games, I think were doing a good job. We made smart decisions today. I think we have a number of options for handling the ball. Last year we relied on Kate Townley every possession. This year, Jen Blues is very confident handling the ball and Leala Wegwerth has really improved her ball-handling skills from last year. Molly Miller is playing at the four-spot right now, but she played the three last year and can handle the ball for us, especially in the post. On the home opener with Cornell on Wednesday night: Cornell is a very scrappy team that we had a tough team with last year at their place. We played them early in the season and I think as the season goes along you get better and better handling the ball. Cornell is aggressive, but I am very pleased with how we handled the full-court pressure in our first two games. I think two 40-minute games of tough, in-your-face defense will really help us against Cornell. |
