Binghamton University was well represented on the final New England Collegiate Conference all-star teams, as three BU women and two men were selected by the conferences head coaches. Junior guard Bess Greenberg (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was voted Player of the Year for the second straight year. Greenberg was joined on the first team by sophomore forward Sarah Cartmill (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca). Sophomore forward Leah Truncale (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) was named to the second team. In addition, second-year coach Laurie Trow was voted Coach of the Year by her peers after steering the Bearcats to a perfect conference record (16-0) and second consecutive regular season title. In two seasons, Trows overall record is a remarkable 51-6 (89.5%). For the men, freshman forward Jeff St. Fort (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) was selected as co-Rookie of the Year, and was joined on the honorable mention unit by sophomore point guard Michael Wright (Hollywood, Fla./Hallandale). Last year, no BU players were selected to the team. Greenberg leads the nine-team conference in scoring (20.7) and three-point field goal percentage (48.6%), and is second in field goal percentage (52.3%), assist average (4.5) and free throw percentage (80.2%). Her points per game ranks 15th in the country, and her three-point accuracy is fourth best. Greenberg was named NECC Player of the Week four times, and was selected to the Weekly Honor Roll four more times. Cartmill ranks third in scoring (16.3), fourth in free throw percentage (77.3%) and sixth in rebounding (7.7) in the NECC. It is the first time Cartmill has earned all-conference honors. Truncale, who ranks third in rebounding (9.7) and first in blocked shots (2.2) was a repeat selection to the second team. St. Fort is the top-ranking freshman scorer in the conference with 14.4 points per game, and also is among the top-10 in field goal percentage (50.7%). Wright is the NECC leader in steals by a wide margin (3.7) a figure that ranks third in the nation. Wright also stands third in assists (5.2). Both BU teams are awaiting possible ECAC Division II tournament berths, which will be announced Monday afternoon. The women (25-2) are expecting a number seed and host role, while the men (14-12) have an outside chance of securing one of four berths. |
