Women's
basketball loses to Northeastern 53-43 Box Score VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman guard Maralene Zwarich (Marriam, Kan.) had a game-high 22 points and also grabbed nine rebounds, leading the Northeastern Huskies (6-12, 4-3 AE) to a 53-43 win over the Binghamton Bearcats (7-9, 3-3 AE) in a conference game Wednesday night at West Gymnasium. Zwarich was the only player in double figures on either side, as the game remained low-scoring throughout. The Bearcats were held to 27 percent shooting for the game, while Northeastern shot just 33 percent. The Huskies outrebounded Binghamton 29-17 in the second half, with nine boards coming on the offensive end, leading to several putbacks. The Huskies wound up with a 44-40 rebounding edge for the night. Sophomore center Kristin Hibler (Hutchinson, Kan.) and freshman guard Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) each had nine points for Binghamton, while Hibler and junior forward Leala Wegwerth (Maplewood, Minn.) each had eight rebounds. Northeastern led 27-24 at halftime, but both teams opened up the second half cold from the floor, and only eight combined points were scored in the first 7:19 of the final stanza. A jumper by Rachel Laws with 12:41 remaining gave the Bearcats their only lead of the second half, 30-29. Binghamton trailed just 44-42 with 2:54 remaining, but the Huskies closed the game with a 9-1 run, making 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:06. The Bearcats take to the road on Saturday for a conference game against Vermont, with tip-off slated for 1 p.m. The next home game will be next Wednesday against Hartford at 7 p.m. NOTES: The 43-point output by Binghamton was its lowest point total since February 2, 1996, when BU also scored 43 points against Potsdam in a 43-39 victory ... The last time Binghamton scored fewer than 43 points in a game came in a 61-42 loss to Brockport on February 2, 1991 ... The Bearcats have been held under 50 points just five times in the last five years ... Hibler's eight rebounds were a new career high, while Wegwerth marked a season high with eight caroms. |
