EDINBURG, Texas Junior center Nicole Dypolt (Calgary,
Alberta) converted a layup with 1.6 seconds left to give
visiting Binghamton (3-5) a 61-59 victory over Texas-Pan American
(0-11) in a womens basketball game Friday night. Dypolt,
who finished with career highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds,
collected her own miss in the lane and banked home the game-winning
shot from the left side. The basket capped a comeback for the
Bearcats, who trailed by six with 6:45 left before closing the
game on a 16-8 run. Binghamton freshman guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) led all scorers with 17 points, and junior guard Kate Townley (St. Paul, Minn.), returning to the lineup following ankle surgery, dished out a career-high nine assists. Blues hit on 6-of-10 field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Dypolt shot 6-of-8 from the floor, and added three blocks in her finest collegiate game. Trailing 51-45 with 6:45 left, Blues scored six straight points for the Bearcats to tie the game. Then down 59-57, Blues nailed a jumper to tie the score with 1:08 left. Binghamtons defense then held Pan American without a point for the final 90 seconds, setting up Dypolts heroics. The game was tied 28-28 at the half, and BU withstood 58% shooting from the host school over the final 20 minutes. The Bearcats were equally accurate from outside the arc, hitting 9-of-14 three-pointers for the game, including a perfect 4-of-4 in the second half. Binghamton concludes its two-game Texas swing with a Sunday afternoon tilt at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. |
