Vermont sharp-shooting does in Bearcats in 79-58 loss
Visiting Catamounts shoot 51 percent for the game as Binghamton drops fifth straight

VESTAL, N.Y.--Senior guard Morgan Hall (Hanover, N.H.) poured in 17 of her game-high 28 points in the opening period, and the visiting Vermont Catamounts (14-6, 6-3 AE) cruised to a 79-58 win over host Binghamton (7-13, 3-7 AE) in a conference matchup Wednesday night at West Gymnasium. The loss was the fifth straight and seventh in the last nine games for Binghamton.

Vermont opened the second half on a 15-3 run, stretching a 12-point halftime margin to a 55-31 lead with 15:13 to play. Six different players scored during the run for the Catamounts. The Bearcats were held to just one field goal in the opening 7:25 of the second stanza, and got no closer than the 12-point halftime margin over the final 20 minutes.

Hall scored 13 points in the opening 11 minutes of the game and connected on 8-of-11 shots in the opening period. As a team, Vermont shot 59 percent in the first half and held a 40-28 lead at the intermission. Meanwhile, despite shooting 46 percent on the evening, Binghamton was outrebounded 33-27 and turned the ball over 20 times. It was the third game in a row that BU had at least 20 turnovers.

Freshman guard Jen Blues (Overland Park, Kan.) led three Bearcats in double figures with 14 points. Junior guard Kate Townley (St. Paul, Minn.) and freshman forward Rachel Laws (Wyncote, Pa.) each netted 10 points. Townley also dished out seven assists.

Vermont put three players in double figures. Sophomore forward Katie McNamara (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored 17 points and junior forward Aaron Yantzi (Waterloo, Ont.) added 14 points and seven rebounds. In addition to her 28-point scoring performance, Hall added a game-high eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in 38 minutes.

The game concluded the Bearcats three-game home stretch. Binghamton will travel to Orono, Maine for a noon showdown with the first-place Black Bears on Sunday. The game will be the America East TV Game of the Week and will be televised by Empire Sports Network and the New England Sports Network. The next home game will be Wednesday, February 19 against Albany at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The 21-point loss matched the largest of the season ... Binghamton dropped a 72-51 decision to Syracuse on December 21 ... The Bearcats five-game losing streak is the longest in-season skid since the team lost the first eight games of the 1989-90 season ... Binghamton has lost four straight home games for the first time since November 21-December 12, 1989 ... Vermont head coach Keith Ceiplicki won his 120th game for the school, tying Cathy Inglese for the most all-time at Vermont.
