Bearcats
fall to Niagara 16-3 VESTAL, N.Y.--In the season's home opener, the Bearcats (0-3) fell behind early and never could battle back, falling to Niagara (3-2) 16-3 at the East Gym Complex. The visiting Purple Eagles scored three goals in the first 3:37 of the game, and led 11-2 at the half. Sophomore attacker Ashley Baker (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) led Niagara with five goals, while graduate attacker Ashley Grosso (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna) added three goals and a game-high four assists. Senior attacker Sandra Gallegos (Clarkston, Mich./Clarence) tallied three assists, and she and sophomore midfielder Courtney Dowd (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) had two goals apiece. The Purple Eagles outshot Binghamton 32-14 and tallied 31 ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Nucci (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) stopped seven shots in goal. The Bearcats were led by freshman attacker Kristen Disch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), who scored the first two goals of her collegiate career. Freshman midfielder Allison Lak (Nassau, N.Y./Columbia) added Binghamton's other goal and sophomore midfielder Erin Wall (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) dished out an assist. The Bearcats also had one free position goal and one unassisted goal. Binghamton tallied 30 ground balls and controlled the draw 18 times. Junior goalkeeper Allison Steinberg (Pearl River, N.Y.) had 12 saves. Binghamton opens America East Conference play next Saturday with a noon game at Boston University. The Terriers are the defending conference champions.
