Immediate Release: April 10, 2005 Contact: Thomas Moore II (sports@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-2956 Binghamton women's lacrosse fails to stop Vermont comeback, losing 12-11 Box Score Photos VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior attack Vanessa Cox recorded a game-high six goals, including the game-winning goal with just under five minutes left to play to power Vermont (4-6, 1-0 AE) to a 12-11 come-from-behind win over Binghamton (2-7, 0-2 AE) in an America East Conference women's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the second in a row for the Bearcats. Last season the Bearcats defeated the Catamounts by the identical score, 12-11 for their first ever and only America East win as a program. The first half opened with a 4-0 run for Binghamton. Those goals were scored by senior attack Laura Gabbamonte (Glen Cove, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Jessica Cotton (Victor, N.Y.) and a pair by freshman midfielder Leanne Musso (Auburn, N.Y.). Vermont responded with three goals of their own. With just under five minutes to play in the second till four minutes into the second half, the Bearcats answered back with five straight goals. Sophomore midfielder Anna Riordan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) netted two of the goals, while sophomore attack Danielle Edwards (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored three of them, giving the Bearcats the 9-3 advantage. Vermont responded once again, this time using a 9-2 run to end the game. Over this span Cox scored five of her goals. Only sophmore midfielder Heather Grose (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Gabbamonte were able to score goals for the host Bearcats. The game-winning goal was scored by Cox with just 4:27 left to play in the game on a free position shot. "Today we had great energy and great trust in each other but we are a young team and need to learn how to use them to our advantage," head coach Emily Edmonston said. "We could have made some better decisions that did not lead to turnovers." Senior goalie Christa Quon (Vestal, N.Y.) made a season-high 21 saves, while Vermont goalie Meaghan Hanley had 12. With assists for Binghamton was Wetherall with four, Grose and Musso each had one.- Vermont had 42 shots, while Binghamton had 26. Vermont had the slight advantage scooping 33 ground balls, while Binghamton collected 28. Vermont had 7 turnovers, while the Bearcats had 11. The Bearcats will host Quinnipiac on Tuesday at 4 p.m. |
