WRESTLING Bearcats defeat Campbell 27-12 in season-opener |

VESTAL, N.Y. In the season-opening dual for both teams, Binghamton University won seven of 10 weight classes en route to a 27-12 wrestling victory over visiting Campbell University (N.C.) Friday evening in the East Gym. Binghamton graduate student Craig Tefft (Oxford, N.Y.) opened the meet with a pin at heavyweight. Tefft needed 4:32 to pin his opponent and give BU a 6-0 lead. The Bearcats then picked up five decisions in the next eight bouts to clinch the win. With BU leading 18-12, junior Jeff McAveney (New Fairfield, Conn.) clinched the victory with a 7-5 decision at 174 pounds. Senior 197-pound Steve Lane (Bridgewater, Va.) provided the final six points with a dominating 17-0 technical fall in just 2:25. Junior 149-pound Joe Privitere (Johnson City, N.Y.), ranked 22nd in the latest Intermat national poll, raised his overall record to 6-2 on the season with an 8-3 decision. He is 26-8 in career duals. Campbell is a member of the Colonial Athletic
Association, which BU joined this year. |
