Foster scores big win over 20th-ranked foe
Freshman 165-pounder Ron Foster (Peru, N.Y.) provided
the fireworks during Binghamton's 29-10 defeat to Buffalo on
December 5, stopping the nation's 20th-ranked wrestler in a 9-5
decision. Foster, who improved to 2-1 in duals and 5-5 overall,
jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Buffalo's Dave Guarino, who is
also the reigning New York State champion. He put Guarino to
his back in the first period for three near-fall points, and
continued to apply pressure. Leading 5-2 entering the third period,
Foster recorded an escape and another takedown to forge an 8-2
cushion. The offensive outburst against such an elite opponent
impressed head coach Mike Fusilli.
"It
was Ron's best match of the season - against his toughest opponent
by far," Fusilli said. "He had a great start and stayed
aggressive throughout the match. He kept looking for opportunities
to score."
Gaurino
advanced to the NCAA Division I Championship last season, winning
three matches in the process.
The
Bearcats dropped seven of 10 bouts and lost at Buffalo, 29-10.
