The game was played in a driving rainstorm generated by Hurricane Ivan. "We'll take the win," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "We've never played in conditions this tough before. Give Fairleigh Dickinson credit because they battled the whole game. We were able to finish off our chances and that was the difference today." O'Shaugnessy's goal came just 7:26 into the contest off a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Kelly Sanders (Ramsey, N.J.). At the 42:01 mark, O'Shaugnessy found freshman forward Tricia Reed (Oswego, N.Y.) in front of the goal who slid the ball into the net. Each team had seven shots in the first half but the Bearcats led 2-0. The visiting Knights started off quick in the second half as graduate student Julia Ralph took a feed from junior back Jennifer Tarvin and scored on a breakaway at the 50:15 mark. Sophomore keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) dove for the ball before the shot was taken but was unable to scoop it off the drenched ground. Ralph then got behind her and tapped the ball into the net. Binghamton reclaimed its two-goal led when senior forward Tatiana Mathelier (Pamona, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the season at the 60:59 mark. She took a pass from freshman midfielder Maria Krug (Norwich, Conn.) to the right of the goal and fired home to give Binghamton a cushion it would not relinquish. Fairleigh Dickinson outshot Binghamton 16-15 but Bowers made eight saves to preserve the lead. "Kristie played well given the circumstances," Leightman said. "You can't fault her on that goal they scored." The Bearcats host Long Island University on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
