Kissel shatters career mark as women’s soccer rolls, 9-0

For Immediate Release: October 8, 1999

Binghamton University women’s soccer remained unbeaten in conference play with a 9-0 victory over visiting Felician College (N.J.) Friday on the West Gym field. The lopsided win — BU’s second 9-0 margin of the season — raised the team’s record to 7-3-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in New England Collegiate Conference play. The Bearcats have won five consecutive games, outscoring opponents 31-1 during that stretch.

Senior forward Jamie Kissel (Pearl River/Nanuet) poured in four goals with one assist to become the school’s all-time points leader. Kissel overtook BU Hall of Famer Neomie Friedman (1990-93), whose 141 career points stood for six years. Kissel now has 58 career goals and 30 assists for 146 points, and has at least seven games remaining. She is now just three goals shy of overtaking Friedman (60 goals) as the program’s scoring leader.

Kissel and sophomore linemate Sarah Young (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) took turns filling the net in the first half as the Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Just 3:32 into the contest, Young, who wound up with three goals and two assists, set up Kissel for a breakaway goal. Then Young scored with 24:18 remaining. With time winding down in the half, the pair scored goals less than three minutes apart. In the second period, Young converted a rebound off a Kissel bullet, and then Kissel collected the record-breaking points, outracing the Felician keeper to a ball at the near post and knocking it in from six yards out for a 6-0 lead. By the time both players were resting on the bench, the scoring line read: Kissel- Young-Kissel-Young-Young-Kissel-Kissel.

Kissel now has 14 goals and seven assists in 11 games, while Young has nine goals and a team-best 10 assists. Other scorers were freshman midfielder Kristine Accordino (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) and sophomore forward Merri Montenare (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River). Montenare headed in her sixth goal of the season with 19:53 remaining.

Junior Kathy Heffron (New Hartford/New Hartford) and freshman Lauren Cherry (Wyncote, Pa./Cheltenham) each played a half in goal to share the shutout — BU’s third consecutive and fifth of the season.

Binghamton outshot the Golden Falcons, 41-4. Coach Jeff Leightman’s squad now faces four straight away games beginning with a 4 p.m. match at Kutztown (Pa.) next Thursday.
