No. 19 West Virginia defeats Binghamton 4-1

VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman forward Kiley Harris scored twice and freshman midfielder Ashley Banks had a goal and two assists, leading No. 19 West Virginia (11-3) to a 4-1 win at Binghamton (8-3-1) in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at West Gym Field. It was the Bearcats' first game against a nationally-ranked opponent this season.

Binghamton came out strong in the early going as senior forward Tatiana Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y.) netted her fourth goal of the season at the 10:01 mark. She fired a diagonal shot from the left-hand side of the goal to give the Bearcats a 1-0 advantage. Freshman Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Lauren Massey (Burlington, Ontario) were credited with assists. Banks, however, got the equalizer at the 20:32 mark as she headed in a cross from freshman midfielder Kim Bonilla.

With the game tied at 1-1, the Mountaineers went on a two-goal outburst late in the first half. Harris deflected in a corner kick from senior forward Laura Kane at 33:20. Exactly 3:24 later, Kane headed in a throw in from Banks to make the score 3-1.

The second half was scoreless until Harris scored off a corner kick at 69:48. Banks was credited with the assist.

"Give West Virginia credit," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "They showed why they are the No. 19 team in the country. I am proud of the way our team stayed with them for much of the game but we did not have an answer for their throw ins. We played well everywhere except in the penalty box area where we let in some poor goals."

Sophomore keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) made four saves for Binghamton.

The Bearcats host Albany on Friday at 4 p.m.
