Women's tennis makes home debut

VESTAL, N.Y. - Under new head coach Mike Stevens, Binghamton women's tennis made its home debut Saturday, hosting Niagara and Quinnipiac in two non-scoring duals. The Bearcats won seven of eight singles matches and three of four doubles matches against Niagara, but managed just one singles win against Quinnipiac. In the third match of the day, Quinnipiac and Niagara played only four doubles matches, with Quinnipiac posting four wins.

"Overall, it was good to see the team improve from Cornell (last weekend)," Stevens said. "They worked hard all week and you could see the improvement today, especially in our second match. Quinnipiac is a good team, and they were too strong for us in doubles. But we picked up our level of play against Niagara."

Freshman Melis Altinay (Antalya, Turkey) was the team's lone double singles winner. She posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the third spot against Quinnipiac before moving up to No. 2 and recording a 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 win against Niagara.
