Immediate Release: January 30, 2005 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Freeman and Koprivica advance to second round at Cornell Women's Tennis Winter Invitational VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman Alyssa Freeman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) and sophomore Jelena Koprivica (Belgrade, Serbia) each advanced to the second round of their singles flights as the Binghamton women's tennis team resumed its season at the Cornell Winter Invitational this past weekend. In addition, sophomores Zeynep Altinay (Antalya, Turkey) and Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each won the consolation bracket of their respective singles flights. Freeman fought off two match points against Ashley Ebbert of Cornell to win 6-2, 4-5, 7-5 in the first round of the C Singles Flight. She lost her second round match to Pascaline Cette of UMBC 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Koprivica defeated Nada Curcic of Bucknell 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the first round of the A Singles Flight before falling to top-ranked Milena Kachar of Columbia 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Altinay lost her first match in the A Singles Flight before winning three consecutive matches to capture the consolation bracket. Kushnirovich shook off an opening match loss in the B singles flight to win her final three matches as well. |
