She helped lead the women's team to a second-place finish out of 21 teams. The men were 15th out of 29 teams. Syracuse won the men's title while New Hampshire defeated Binghamton 37-65 for the women's title. Angell finished first out of 227 runners in the 5,000 meter race, clocking a time of 17:40. She becomes the first Binghamton women's runner in the 38-year history of the Albany Invitational to win the individual title. In addition, Angell was just four seconds of the course record of 17:36. "Erica and I were very pleased with her performance today," head coach Annette Acuff said. "We knew she had a good chance to be competitive for first place today but to do as well as she did was great." Angell stayed with Caitlin Hayes and Megan Hepp of New Hampshire for much of the race but in the final mile, she pulled away to win by six seconds. "Erica's fitness level is really high right now, which helped her at the end of the race," Acuff said. "She is not afraid to compete with anyone and always give it 110 percent. Juniors Stacy Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y.) and Kathryn Murnane (Rockville Center, N.Y.) placed sixth and seventh with times of 18:09 and 18:12 respectively. Fellow junior Allison Furey (Smyrna, N.Y.) turned in her best race of the season, finishing 33rd (19:02) while senior Lindsey Bohrer-Yardley (Oneida, N.Y.) was 36th (19:04). Junior Prahlad Genung (Afton, N.Y.) finished 66th out of 316 runners to pace the men's team. His time was 26:44 for the five-mile course. Binghamton heads to the America East Conference Championships on Oct. 30. |
