Evolution of early land flora
My research concentrates on lycopods and progymnosperms from middle Devonian deposits in New York state. Initailly studies are descriptive because many of the organisms are new to science, show exquisite anatomical preservation and have reproductive parts in connection. Most of the spores and tissues allow study to the level of the electron microscope, revealing a wealth of new data and insight into evolutionary trends. Major evolutionary questions posed apply to both groups, albeit somewhat differently, and deal with development of tissue systems, heterospory, origin of leaves and trees. The subsequent evolutionary lineages of both groups are elusive, intriguing, and under invesitigation.
