Bridging the Digital Divide - Computer Literacy VolunteersTeaching Computer Literacy

In Spring 2013, computer literacy courses were held at three community partners (Binghamton Housing Authority, Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier, and The Broome County Public Library) of BDDP.

Computer Literacy training takes place in three different capacities:

Volunteers have the opportunity to work with populations such as unemployed or underemployed adults, youth, older adults, and immigrants.

The idea for this project was conceived by Broome Community College Professor, Gary Kohut, who has been partnering with the George F. Johnson Dream Center for the past few years to provide refurbished computers to local college-bound youth via a service-learning course: CST 140.

Bridging the Digital Divide Project - Oasis Afterschool Program Website SnapshotWebsite & Database Development

Several initiatives to provide IT support, including assistance with graphic design, website, and information management, have been completed or are underway at the OASIS After School Program, the West Side Neighborhood Project, Eco International, and the Boys & Girls Club of Binghamton.

In Spring 2012, two Binghamton University classes incorporated service learning projects that directly provided assistance to these partners.

If you have the skills necessary to provide Website and Database support and are interested in continuing the project, contact the CCE at cce@binghamton.edu.
