THE BIOCHEMISTRY PROGRAM AT BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Skills :

  • Understand the principles of mechanics and thermodynamics, including topics in circular, fluid, and oscillatory motion, and the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism, light and wave motion
  • Understand the fundamentals of molecular biology of animal physiology, including cell structure, DNA transcription, translation, cell signaling, immunologic system,nerve function and functions of animal organ systems
  • Be knowledgeable of different structures and physiologies of organisms, and understand evolution and animal behavior as well as ecology
  • Be able to separate, purify and analyze organic compounds, synthesize molecules through single and multi-step mechanisms and be knowledgeable of spectroscopic methods
  • Know techniques used in molecular genetics such as manipulation of microorganisms, sub-cloning DNA into vectors , sequencing, of DNA, detection of specific DNA sequences with the polymerase chain reaction and DNA microarrays, and the preparation of DNA
  • Know common techniques to isolate enzymes and other proteins and biomolecules, which include fractional precipitation, electrophoresis, gel filtration, ion exchange chromatography and various analyses
