Pride Week Program: Job Search Issues and Strategies for LGBT Students
All job seekers have choices to make when looking for jobs, creating a resume and choosing an employer that is right for them. Those who are also part of the LGBTQ community may also need to factor in how to incorporate their sexual identity or gender identity into their job search. It is important to know there are resources to help you make smart choices that are right for your individual situation, including the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD)! The Center for Career and Professional Development is proud to celebrate Pride Week by offering programming to address the unique needs of the LGBT community.
  • Job Search Issues and Strategies for LGBT Students -- Friday, March 9, 1:10 PM-2:10 PM in UU 111

Attend this program and discuss disclosure as well as how to make the most of your strengths in the interview and beyond. You will be exposed to the many resources available to you as a diverse student and learn to research a company's LGBT friendliness factor. This is your opportunity to discover all that is available to you and ask the questions you've had about applying for a job.

The professional staff at the CCPD has been Safe Zone trained, meaning you can feel comfortable and confident when approaching them about questions you may have regarding sexual identity and career development. In addition, the CCPD has been a leader in offering resources for students in the LGBTQ community and, as a result, was recognized in 2012 with Silver Level Certification by Out for Work’s Career Center Certification Program (CCCP). Students with career development inquiries are encourage to come to the CCPD and speak with a Career Counselor during CCPD counselor-on-call walk in service.  

Summer Internship Funding Available for Undergraduate Students!

Sponsored by Binghamton’s campus food services provider, Sodexo, Inc., a newly established Sodexo Internship Fund provides the opportunity for talented undergraduate students to secure financial support while completing an unpaid summer 2012 internship. Through the Fund, chosen students will receive a stipend of up to $5,000 to complete an unpaid internship. For more information about the application process and how to apply, visit the Sodexo Internship Fund webpage. Applications will be reviewed and decisions made on a rolling basis.

HARPUR STUDENTS:  LACE Application Deadline this Friday at 4:00 PM

The Liberal Arts to Careers Externship (LACE) program provides students in Harpur College an opportunity to shadow Harpur alumni in the workplace. Selected students are matched with a professional for a shadowing experience at the sponsor’s workplace. Students are matched with sponsors based on interests and availability, as well as geographic locations. Preference is given to sophomores. Applicants must have completed two semesters of college by May 15 in order to be considered. Resource Spotlight:  Search for Jobs/Internships Based on Location via Going Global

Are you looking for an internship or a full time position? Are you willing to relocate anywhere in the United States? Try researching opportunities using Going Global! This online resource is available on the Center for Career and Professional Development’s (CCPD) home page and access is possible by logging-in using your PODs information. Going Global’s database contains access to a Browse USA/Canada City Career Guides section that allows you look for opportunities in major U.S. cities including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, NYC, Portland, San Jose, and Washington DC, among others. 

Within the City Career Guides are a number of useful links to city-specific career and employment resources. Discover information such as industry and employment trends, what the top companies are in the region, which organizations sponsor H-1B visas, cost of living and city overviews, etc. In addition, check out the job and internship search resources which include links to city-specific online job sites. Going Global’s 80,000 page database contains valuable information, whether you are looking for an opportunity in the U.S. or abroad! Check it out, and you will be surprised with the results.  

Meet Missy Gluckmann '90, Global Education Entrepreneur, on Thursday (3/8)

The Binghamton University Globalistas (BUGs), in partnership with other campus groups, invite the campus community to meet BU alumna and global education entrepreneur, Missy Gluckmann '90, on Thursday, March 8th in observance of International Women’s Day. This is a virtual event being held from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM in Academic A, Room G005 (Collaboratory in basement). Space is limited and registration is required.
