Updates From the Center for Career and Professional Development

LinkedIn: Ways to Connect with Alumni, Binghamton University Community

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with over 200 million members, and over 40,000 members have a connection to Binghamton University. One of LinkedIn's beneficial functions is that it allows you to network and connect with Binghamton University faculty, staff and alumni worldwide. Why might you want to search for alumni? By searching and connecting with alumni, you are able to get a glimpse into what you can do with your major, learn about career paths, build a professional network, make connections in order to conduct information interviews with people in careers of interest, and even learn about organizational culture.

LinkedIn has recently introduced a new alumni tool that lets you view and possibly connect with the 40,000+ Binghamton University LinkedIn members. To search for alumni, log into your Linkedin profile and then in the browser bar type in www.linkedin.com/alumni. From there, narrow your search based on employer, geographic location, and/or position title. Another option to find alumni is by conducting an advanced people search, where you can further narrow your results by industry, groups, or keywords. To learn more about how to connect with Alumni, attend the upcoming CCPD program "I Have a LinkedIn Profile, Now What?" on Thursday, March 7 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in LNG 102 (computer lab). You can also visit the CCPD website at http://www2.binghamton.edu/ccpd/linkedin.html to learn more about creating an effective LinkedIn profile.

Eat, Drink, & Be Hired: Professional Dining Etiquette and Networking Program (Register by 3/8)

It is imperative that for every student to begin building a professional network, and important professional relationships are formed and strengthened in social settings, including formal meals and cocktail hours. This program is designed to enhance your competence and comfort in any professional-social setting.

The number one employer criticism of interns and new college hires is lack of professionalism and etiquette savvy. Good professional etiquette indicates to employers that you are a mature, responsible adult who can aptly represent their organization. Whether you are graduate school bound, looking for an internship, or applying for positions after graduation, etiquette plays an important role in making favorable impressions and projecting a certain standard of conduct with clients and superiors.

The "Eat, Drink & Be Hired! Professional Dining Etiquette and Networking" program on Wednesday, March 13 from 6-8:00 PM in the Mandela Room is an opportunity to learn and practice good dining etiquette and brush up on your networking skills. To register, please complete the registration form and pay the $7 fee (non-refundable) through the CCPD Website or in person by Friday, March 8th, 2013. Register TODAY!
