IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

The Career Development Center now administers the Academic Internship Programs including the fall and spring Professional Internship Programs and Johnson City Mentor Program (both formerly through OCC). See the Academic Internship Programs page for more information.

Internships are a valuable part of career exploration in which you can receive training, gain experience as well as a better understanding of what is needed to prepare for and succeed in a particular profession. An internship can be paid or unpaid, be for credit or not for credit and can vary in the hours or duration.

Internship Quick Reference Guide

What is an Internship?

An Internship is a type of experiential education – learning by doing. An internship can also be described as a short-term work experience in which students receive training and gain experience in a specific field or career area. An internship can be paid or unpaid, be for credit or not for credit and can vary in the hours or duration.

Students can have a variety of learning goals for their internship:

  • Academic learning – apply knowledge learned in the classroom to the workplace
  • Career development – gain knowledge of the qualifications and duties of a position and can explore interest in a field
  • Skill development – gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge required in the workplace
  • Personal development – gain decision-making skills, critical thinking skills, increased confidence and self-esteem. (National Society of Experiential Education)

When to Start Looking for a Summer Internship
Internship deadlines vary from organization to organization. Some deadlines for summer internships are as early as November but most are between February and April. Many organizations do not have formal internship programs so it is best to begin your search early. Definitely begin your search for a summer internship in the fall semester by determining your goals and priorities, researching potential organizations and developing your resume.

Developing Internship/Job Search Tools Finding the right internship involves several steps. After you have determined your wants and needs you will need to develop some job search tools. The Career Development Center can help progress with developing the right tools.

Career Development Programs
There are many career development programs offered during the semester on writing a resume and cover letter, interviewing, and searching for an internship.
Check the CDC calendar to find out when these programs are offered.

Explore the resources in the Career Resource Area to help you with internship/job search tools.

To have your resume or cover letter reviewed, come to Counselor on Call.

Sample Timeline for conducting a Summer Internship Search

September: Write a draft of your résumé and get it critiqued at CDC during Counselor-on-Call, attend the Fall Job & Internships Fair, participate in a mock interview, and network with organizations.

October: Attend career-related workshops offered through CDC; look through the internship resources in the Career Resource Area in the CDC; complete your profile and check internship postings in eRecruiting; check Off-Campus College (OCC) for internship postings; meet with a career counselor in CDC to discuss internship options and resources.

November/December: Set up informational interviews during winter break. Send an application to those internship programs with early deadlines; begin talking to friends and family to network your way into an organization.

January/February: Prepare for and attend the Spring Job & Internship Fair; Conduct a mock interview if you did not do so in the Fall

March: Apply for summer internships/interview for positions; write thank-you letters for ALL interviews
