Bochra Kouraichi, the Fulbright FLTA (Foreign Language Teaching Assistant) in Arabic for academic year 2015-2016, in spring 2015 gave two presentations, one on 16-Apr, the other on 7-May. Each featured her homeland of Tunisia, with music, delicious food prepared by Bochra, and a PowerPoint. Here follows her summary, plus that of a student, Kyle Welch, who wrote his in Arabic, which he then translated into English.

Bochra on Her Experience

Hello, my name is Bochra Kouraichi, and during academic year 2014-2015 I was a Tunisian Fulbright FLTA from Monastir, Tunisia. I got my MA in Applied Linguistics in April 2014, and got this opportunity to teach Arabic and take graduate courses at Binghamton University. I had the pleasure to assist both Prof. Omid Ghaemmaghami and Lotfi Zekraoui in teaching Elementary Arabic for undergrad students within the CNES Department. I had also the privilege to make a presentation about Tunisia in Arabic for my students of Arabic 204. This has allowed me another chance to present my country and culture as a Tunisian woman while delivering a talk to students and faculty at university on May 7,2015. I am eternally grateful to be given this opportunity to share my culture and my food as shown in the slides.

In high school, I learned about Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco in my French class; however, we only discussed the cultural and political relationship between France and Tunisia so I learned a lot from the lecture. The most important thing that I learned is that Tunisian women enjoy the same rights as men thanks to the first Tunisian president, Habib Bourguiba. For example, employers must pay women the same salary as men for the same work. Additionally, Tunisian women have the same opportunities to study as men. I also thought that it’s interesting that Tunisians study the sciences and other subjects in French instead of Arabic. If it had not been for this presentation, I wouldn’t have known that snow falls in the mountains located in the north during the winter. Tunisia is not large, but it has many geographical features. Finally, I enjoyed the Tunisian food that we ate in class, but I wasn’t expecting it to be as diverse as it was. Thank you very much for the presentation! I really desire to visit Tunisia in order to speak French and Arabic!
